Estimate based on the IRS Form 2290 tax tables (Rev. July 2026). The heavy vehicle use tax is paid to the IRS and is separate from our filing fee. Bought a used vehicle from a private seller who already paid this period's tax? You still file your own 2290, and the seller can claim a credit for the months after the sale. If you first drove it in the month you bought it, your tax starts the following month, so it's one month less than shown here. Your due date doesn't change. See the IRS instructions.
File by the last day of the month after the month a vehicle is first used on public highways — no matter when your registration is due.
| First used in | File by |
|---|---|
| July | August 31 |
| August | September 30 |
| September | October 31 |
| October | November 30 |
| November | December 31 |
| December | January 31 |
| January | Last day of February |
| February | March 31 |
| March | April 30 |
| April | May 31 |
| May | June 30 |
| June | July 31 |
If the due date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, it moves to the next business day. The calculator shows the exact date. Vehicles first used in different months go on separate returns.
$100 at 55,000 lbs, plus $22 for each additional 1,000 lbs, up to $550 over 75,000 lbs. These are full-year amounts for vehicles first used in July; after July the tax is prorated. Logging vehicles pay 75%.

A quicker and easier way to file the 2290, within minutes I was able to print the stamped version that has to be submitted to the DMV.
First time I ever paid my 2290 online. I was nervous at first. But after I paid and got my stamped 2290 five minutes later, I was EXTREMELY satisfied. It was EASIER than I thought it would be. Lightning fast. I will be using this method from here on out!
Awesome app and easy to follow! Always very clearly explained and easy to file forms! Thanks for taking the headache out!
Yes. Most states require a stamped Schedule 1 to register or renew a heavy vehicle. Once the IRS accepts your return, we email you the IRS-stamped Schedule 1 PDF, ready to print or show at the DMV.
The tax period runs July 1 through June 30. A 2290 is due by the last day of the month after the month a vehicle is first used on public highways. For vehicles in use in July, that's August 31. See the due-date chart for every month.
We support the current tax year and the two prior tax years, which is as far back as the IRS accepts e-filing. The IRS can charge penalties and interest on late returns and late payments, so it's best to file as soon as you can.
You still need to file, but you don't owe tax on a suspended vehicle (5,000 miles or less, or 7,500 or less for agricultural vehicles). You still receive a stamped Schedule 1.
If the IRS rejects your return, fix the issue and retransmit as many times as needed at no charge. After acceptance, a VIN correction is $9.95 and a taxable gross weight increase amendment is $12.95.
The tax is paid to the IRS, not to us. You can choose electronic funds withdrawal from your bank account when you file, pay through EFTPS, or mail a check or money order. Our filing fee is separate and charged to your card only when your return is transmitted.
Because your card is charged only at transmission, you never pay for a return you don't send. Refunds are available for returns that haven't been transmitted, within 30 days.
